Project Brief

This bathroom in Pokesdown was being refurbished from top to bottom, and the electrics had to cover three jobs: keep the room warm, get steam out of it, and light it properly.

Heating came from two directions. An electric underfloor heating mat went in under the new floor, run from its own thermostat on the basin wall, and a new towel radiator needed an electrical feed of its own so it can be used without the central heating running.

For ventilation, the room needed an extractor fan that actually takes moist air out of the building, so the fan was installed with ducting run to an external vent. A wall light above the basin and a toothbrush charger finished off the list.

This is one example of the bathroom electrical work carried out by our electricians in Pokesdown and across Bournemouth.

Bathroom Electrical Work Completed

Installed an electric underfloor heating mat beneath the new floor.

Installed and connected the underfloor heating controller.

Installed a toothbrush charger beside the heating controller.

Installed the bathroom towel radiator and its electrical feed.

Fitted a switched fused spur with neon indicator and flex outlet to supply the towel radiator's heating element.

Installed an extractor fan, including the ducting and an external vent.

Installed a bathroom wall light with a pull-cord switch above the basin.

Underfloor Heating and an Electric Towel Radiator

The underfloor heating mat is controlled by a touchscreen thermostat on the basin wall, so the floor temperature is set independently of the rest of the house. The towel radiator runs from its own switched fused spur. The neon shows at a glance when it is on, the fuse protects the heating element, and the flex outlet takes the element's cable straight into the plate, so there is no plug and no trailing lead.

Extractor Fan, Wall Light and Toothbrush Charger

An extractor that only blows into a loft or ceiling void moves the damp somewhere you cannot see it. This Vent-Axia fan, rated IPX5 against water, is ducted through to an external vent so moist air leaves the building. Above the basin, the wall light has its own pull cord, a simple way to switch a light from inside a bathroom. Standard 13 A sockets are not allowed close to a bath or shower, so a dedicated toothbrush charger gives everyday charging a proper home.
